The JCI Library is a specialist library that has supported the research activities of the Carlebach Institute since its establishment in March 1992. The library specializes in German-Jewish history and culture from the early 19th century to the present, but also covers various other fields, including philosophy, literary scholarship, memoir books, and more. The collections currently comprise around 4,000 books, journals, and research works in German, English, and Hebrew.
The foundation of the JCI Library is rooted in the personal book collection of its founder, Prof. Dr. Miriam Gillis-Carlebach, which forms the core of its holdings. Over time, the library has expanded significantly through strategic acquisitions and the integration of notable private collections from Rabbi Dr. Hans I. Grunewald, Dr. Moritz Stern, and Rabbi Dr. Ephraim Carlebach. These valuable contributions have greatly enriched the historical and theological dimensions of the collection, making it a vital resource for scholars and researchers worldwide.
The JCI Research library is currently undergoing a centralized cataloging project within the Bar-Ilan University library system. The project aims to enable remote searching and improve the availability of books for students, researchers, and the general public.
