“Ich bin in Altona - zwischen Vertrautheit und Fremdsein, zwischen naivem Unbekummertsein und misstrauischem Verdacht, zwischen sanften Traumen und jahem Erwachen, zwischen damals und danach - zwischen damals und heute.”

Miriam Gillis-Carlebach, 2004

The JCI publications center primarily on the scholarship of Miriam Gillis-Carlebach, alongside works by associated historians and editors. The collection includes monographs, edited volumes, book chapters and articles, spanning from 1979 to 2016.
A central focus is the preservation and presentation of the writings of Joseph Carlebach, former Chief Rabbi of Hamburg. Alongside this, the publications explore Jewish life in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein before and during the Holocaust.
A special place is given to the biographical portrait of Lotte Carlebach-Preuss (“Each Child Is My Only One”), depicting the life of a mother and rabbi's wife. The works appear in German, Hebrew, and English, reflecting academic rigor and a deep personal commitment to the continuity of tradition across generations.
